The Careers team at Swan Hill College are dedicated professionals working together to ensure great pathways and career outcomes for all of our students. All of the staff in the careers office have career qualifications and attend professional development regularly to keep up with what is happening in career development for young people.

All students in Year 9 to 12 undertake a Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) Plan. A broad and wide array of career related activities and events are planned, organised and attended by our students ranging from Year 7 right through to Year 12.

A career newsletter is emailed out fortnightly to all senior students. All Exit interviews are undertaken by the careers team with the aim of ensuring all students are linked to or aware of the requirement to be in employment, education or further training.

Some of the events and activities the career team facilitate or run over the year are as follows:

Managed Individual Pathways Plans All students in Yr 9 to 12 will update and set new career goals for the year. This information is also used to tailor other programs for students Term 1 & 2
VCE AGE Careers Expo Caulfield Melbourne A fantastic opportunity to see the wide variety of post-secondary educational opportunities available in Victoria & attend VCE seminars Early May each year one day excursion to Melbourne for Yr 10 to 12 students
Federation University One on One Advisory Service sessions offered to Yr 12 students A great opportunity for students considering higher education to discuss topics such as transition, accommodation & moving away, pathways/alternative entry schemes, scholarships/Centrelink, support services Term 1 each year
Geelong Work Experience Camp This is a small camp for students who need opportunities to experience work in fields that are difficult to obtain within our district Late June each year
Work Experience Program aimed at Year 10 students but open to any student over 15 years old Available particularly to those students who are not undertaking a VET subject or have a specific need to get a better understanding of a particular work environment Ongoing throughout the school year this includes all school holidays except the Christmas holidays
Swan Hill Rural City Council Work Experience Program This is a chance for students to do a work experience at the council enabling them get a better understanding of the variety of career opportunities available at our local council Applications come out in early March each year and the experiences happen over the year
Next Steps Day Year 10 students All Year 10 students do a career and subject planning day where they do some career workshops and are given some other useful career research resources. They attend the Grow Your Careers Expo at the local TAFE where they get to talk to meet and talk to local employers, Tafes and Universities and do a tour of the TAFE buildings and facilities Late July each year
Advertise University, TAFE and Private Training Colleges Open Days & Come and Experience Days A chance for students to explore and experience University, TAFE and Private Training Colleges to find out what they have to offer and see what it is like. We encourage students from Year 10 to 12 to attend Open Days July to August each year
Subject Information Evening for Year 7 to 12 Offered to all students and their parents to inform them about the subject selection process for their subjects for the next year and what needs to be done prior to the subject selection evenings Around end of July each year
Subject Selection Evenings run after school hours This is a last chance to clarify any issues with selections before the students accompanied by their parents enter their subjects for the following year onto a computer system here at school Starts in August and runs over 3 consecutive weeks each year
Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) Registration / Applications Year 12 students do VTAC Registrations so they can receive an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score. Registering with VTAC also enables students to apply for University places. We step the students through the VTAC registration process and then assist students with any other applications they need to do via VTAC Begins in August closes in October
Where to Now Yr 12 Advisory Day Guest speakers are invited in to the school to speak to all Year 12 students about what is available to them after completing their VCE and leaving school. Speakers include Centrelink re:payments eligibility criteria, local TAFE opportunities, Chances for Children scholarship & budget advice, Job Network providers for assistance with employment and others as required August each year
Mini Careers Expo New initiative available to students in Year 7 to 12. This will be held at our school over a lunchtime exposing all students to Universities, TAFE, Employment providers, Emergency services, local industry & private training colleges May this year

Please note that as new opportunities arise the careers team do their best to bring them into the school for our students, or arrange to take the students to the opportunities with an aim to raise all students aspirations and assist them to achieve their career goals and dreams.
