Our 7-10 English curriculum is closely aligned with AusVELS. We aim to develop our students’ understanding of Standard Australian English and how it works to create meaning in its spoken and written forms. To achieve this, our students learn to listen to, read, view, speak, write, create and reflect on increasingly complex and sophisticated spoken, written and multimodal texts, with accuracy, fluency and purpose.
We hope that they can learn to appreciate, enjoy and use the English language in all its variations and develop a sense of its richness and power to evoke feelings, convey information, form ideas, facilitate interaction with others, entertain, persuade and argue.
In their middle years, our students have the opportunity to complement their core English studies with electives. At Year 9, we offer Power of the Pen, a creative writing elective which helps students to understand how language features, stylistic devices, text structures and images vary depending on the purpose for writing. They have the opportunity to follow this path through into our Year 10 So You Think You Can Write elective, which uses famous works of Literature to model precision and stylistic effect in different styles of writing. For students who aim to study VCE Literature, we also offer a Year 10 Literature elective, helping to build the foundations necessary to succeed in VCE.
Upon reaching VCE, our students have the options of Units 1-4 English, English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Literature. Our VCAL students also have the opportunity to complete a composite program, in which they undertake VCE English and have the opportunity to achieve both their VCAL and VCE certificate.
